How to Connect as an Intern

How to Connect as an Intern - 101

By: Shreya Desai

Congratulations, you did it! You’ve landed your dream internship with your dream company, and now you are ready to launch your professional career. Here are a few communication strategies that will definitely help you be the best intern you can be.

What is growth without goals?

When you begin your internship experience, having a direct conversation with your manager or leader is important in order to get the most out of your experience. During your conversation, learn what your daily responsibilities are, the goals you intend to accomplish, deadlines, and who you are to report to daily. Once you establish your responsibilities and goals, you will have a tangible way to measure your progress throughout your internship experience.

Ask your supervisor to provide consistent progress performance reports.

As an intern, it is critical that you know how you’re performing. Ask your supervisor to share “progress reports” at set time intervals. This will allow you to leverage your full potential by understanding what you do well and what needs improvement. Feedback is essential for growth.

Network to make the most out of your experience

As an intern, you have been provided with an amazing opportunity to connect with new people outside of your immediate network. Take the initiative and introduce yourself to someone who has a job that interests you. This is a great way to learn more about them and their role in the company. Not only have you made a new friend, but you have also created one strong relationship that could help you land your dream career.

Questions are welcomed

Curiosity did not kill the cat. As an intern, you are not expected to know everything. The whole reason for your internship experience is to LEARN.  Always do your best with the tasks given to you, but ask questions if you don’t understand something!

Revision. Revision. Revision.

It never hurt anyone to quadruple check themselves. Whether it’s an assignment, email, or a memo, check yourself. It is crucial to avoid grammatical errors and pay close attention to detail.   Looking professional in every way will only expand the opportunities your internship provides and shows you care!
